Carolyn Garman, Professional PR Diploma

The CIPR Professional PR Diploma has been crucial for me in advancing my career.

After many years freelancing, I joined the NHS and quickly realised that most of my colleagues at my level had postgraduate qualifications. I felt it was essential to validate my experience and ensure I had the skills needed to succeed, especially as I was entering the public sector for the first time.

Although balancing full-time work with study has been a challenge, I’ve genuinely enjoyed the course. My employer has been supportive, granting me study leave to complete assignments. If I had to choose a favourite part, it would be Unit 2, which resonated with my journalistic background and passion for content creation.

I’ve already started applying what I’ve learned. The diploma has helped me improve the planning of communications campaigns, particularly with better stakeholder analysis and more measurable objectives. I even evaluated a PR campaign using the AMEC tools for the first time—something that’s made a real difference to my work.
