Who are the best student communicators?

About the author

Richard Bailey Hon FCIPR is editor of PR Academy's PR Place Insights. He teaches and assesses undergraduate, postgraduate and professional students.

We ran a #bestPRblogs contest for three years at Behind the Spin. Now we’re following the best #prstudent communicators 2017-18 here at PR Place.

Each week, on Friday, we pick the best student blog posts to appear alongside our pick of content from professionals. So the bar is set higher: we’re not merely looking for good student content, but outstanding content that does not look out of place alongside leading figures in the industry.

We’re interested in:

  • Individual blog or LinkedIn posts
  • Posts to group or course blogs
  • Guest posts to other sites
  • Visual content on Instagram and YouTube

This year, we’re not looking to identify a winner; each appearance should be an achievement in itself. But we are tracking the pattern, and so far this academic year one university is ahead of all the others, with many individuals posting to a group site.

University #students #appearances
Ulster 11 11
Liverpool John Moores 2 6
Greenwich 2 3
Bournemouth 2 2
Leeds Beckett 2 2
Sunderland 1 1
UWE Bristol 1 1

While there’s one clear frontrunner amongst universities, there’s also an individual who has appeared more than anyone else. Orlagh Shanks of Liverpool John Moores university was  on our shortlist last year, and is still posting high quality content during her placement year in London. She has appeared five times so far this year, with the next most featured student being Ellie Tyrrell from Greenwich with two appearances.

I’m still keen to discover new PR student writers and content creators. To help me discover you, why not share your content on social media using the #prstudent and #bestPRblogs hashtags? Or send a message to editor@prplace.com.
