Ellen Raftery, Foundation in PR

Having worked for a couple of years from an entry level position in Internal Communications, I wanted to complete a qualification that consolidated everything I had learned on the job as well as give me a broader outlook on the discipline and how it works in organisations and sectors beyond my own.

The PR Foundation was a good fit because it covered internal communication in detail whilst also giving me a good insight into external communication and PR, something I would like to gain more experience in.

I really enjoyed how I could study at my own pace. I had initially planned on aiming for one of the earlier submission dates, but when work and life inevitably got in the way, it was so helpful having two other dates to work towards so that I did not need to rush; I definitely wouldn’t have gotten the same out of it otherwise.

The readings and webinars were really insightful and I could relate a lot of it to the work me and my team do every day, as well as the challenges we face with engaging employees and working cross-functionally to achieve business objectives through our campaigns. It’s definitely given me good parameters to work within this area, particularly with planning and setting objectives, and evaluating campaigns afterwards.

Completing a qualification has been great for my progression as it’s helped me to fill gaps in my skills and knowledge and feel more confident in my abilities – as well as boost my colleagues’ confidence in me!
