Manpreet Matharu, Professional PR Certificate

I decided to pursue this qualification because I wanted to move beyond simply “doing PR” and start approaching communications in a more strategic and purposeful way.

Working in healthcare, I’ve seen firsthand the powerful role communication plays in shaping outcomes. At the same time, I’ve always been inspired by my grandfather’s background in media and storytelling. His influence sparked my passion for communications and ultimately motivated me to formalise my skills through this course.

One of the most rewarding parts of studying has been developing a more structured and thoughtful approach to communications planning. I particularly enjoyed learning how to apply frameworks like AMEC, which helped me better understand the value of research, analysis and evaluation. These are areas that can often be overlooked, but I’ve come to see how essential they are in delivering truly impactful work.

The learning has had a real impact on how I approach my role. I now think much more strategically about audience insight, messaging and channel selection, and I place far greater emphasis on measurement and demonstrating impact. For my final project, I developed a campaign focused on increasing NHS Talking Therapies referrals within the BAME community, using culturally relevant and accessible communications. It was incredibly rewarding to create something so meaningful and directly applicable to my work.

Looking ahead, I feel this qualification has given me a strong foundation to continue growing as a communications professional. It has equipped me with the tools and confidence to deliver more insight-driven, effective work, and I’m excited about the opportunities it will open up—particularly when it comes to taking on more strategic and impactful projects.
